“Why do you keep calling my Calvin?” Rick & Morty Parody Shirts

This “Why do you keep calling my Calvin?” design from our collection of Rick & Morty parody shirts represents the ever elusive Triple Entendre. We see Double Entendres every day. But a Triple Entendre? Oooh, those are special.

There are thee references:

-Rick and Morty

-Back to the Future

-Calvin and Hobbes

How do they all tie together? Let’s take a inter-dimensional trip through the worlds of three classic pieces of pop culture to figure it out.

……………………………………………………………………

Rick and Morty is our new favorite show on Adult Swim, and is partly inspired by Doc and Marty from Back to the Future. One of our Rick and Morty designs is illustrated in the style of Calvin and Hobbes. In fact, it is a rather accurate reflection of the cover art from Scientific Progress Goes Boink, but with Morty and Rick (aka Marty and Doc) in the place of Hobbes and Calvin.

It’s pretty clear that Rick, Doc, and Calvin all have something in common: they’re all crazy inventors. Dreamers. Doers. Mad scientists. Well, not “mad”, but definitely scientists. In this particular scene from Scientific Progress Goes Boink, Calvin has just invented the duplicator. He’s obviously a genius, because his only materials seem to be a marker and a cardboard box. A box, which by the way, would go on to become a transmogrifier as well.

What else do they have in common? The name Calvin. And the curiosity about this name.

In this art, Calvin #2 (aka Morty #2) has just emerged from the duplicator. He is brand new to this world. He knows nothing. Not even his name. Why do you keep calling me Calvin?

This is the same question that Marty asks in Back to the Future.

……………………………………………………………………

When watching Back to the Future, have you ever noticed that half the dialog is comprised of jokes contrasting 1985 and 1955? The joke format is roughly this: Here in 1985, we’re doing all these crazy things that would seem totally alien to someone in 1955, including…

-electing an actor to the presidency

-drinking caffeine free soda

-wearing underwear with brand names printed all over them.

This last joke is delivered by Marty’s Mom, Lorraine. When Marty hits his head in front of his mom’s house, she takes care of him. Marty is knocked out cold, and apparently Lorraine removes his pants while he sleeps. (Kind of creepy, right?). It leads to this conversation:

……………………………………………………………………

Lorraine Baines: I’ve never seen purple underwear before, Calvin.

Marty McFly: Calvin? Wh… Why do you keep calling me Calvin?

Lorraine Baines: Well, that is your name, isn’t it? Calvin Klein? It’s written all over your underwear.

……………………………………………………………………

So in this mash-up art, we are combining Back to the Future and Rick & Morty and Calvin & Hobbes to make one cohesive statement, or rather, to ask one cohesive question: Why do you keep calling me Calvin?

Obviously, we are huge fans of Rick & Morty, and made these designs out of love. We’re also huge fans of Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon in general. We hope you’re not mad, Justin & Dan! If you are, please email us. We wanted to make some Rick & Morty designs, and there are such things as Fair Use and Parody, so we thought “hey, let’s give it a shot!”

Take an interdimensional tour through our design center and create your own totally customized Rick & Morty apparel! You can add your own text, art, and even images. Pi Day Shirts

It’s Friday Pi Day

Nerds and pastry lovers alike celebrate March 14th as Pi day.

The mathematical constant, π, is recognized world wide today since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three digits of π. They also happen to be the only three digits that anyone can really remember since Pi goes on forever and ever and ever.

Larry Shaw, some math guy a way long time ago, started celebrating Pi day with pies because it’s just so punny.

Next year, 2015, will be an even bigger celebration because on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and p.m., the first 10 digits of π are represented. So grab your rolling pins and your calculators because it’s sure to be a rager! If you want to be the coolest guy walking around this day next year, customize a Pi Day shirt! We may not totally get what the deal is with π, but it makes for some FunnyShirts!

Star Spangle Hammered

It’s National Anthem Day, ‘Mericans!

O say can you see by the dawn’s early light the greatness of being American? When Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled Banner,” we doubt he realized just how much more awesome ‘Merica was going to get.

For instance:
We get pizza for every meal now.
We have the baddest, toughest military. Ever.
We have real football.
We are back to back world war champs.
We have the right to customize our shirts.

So exercise your God-given, American right to create a Star Spangled Hammered shirt. Because what so proudly Francis Scott Key hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming was probably one of our funny American flag shirts. (We’re betting he was loopy from the fighting and thought it was the real flag. No worries, Mr. Key, we feel the same way every 5th of July #hangover).

80s Collage - Nostalgia for Funny Shirts

Have access to a digital garment printer? Ruin Halloween by dressing up as an abstract concept!

About four years ago, I wanted to experiment with our new Direct-to-Garment digital printer. If I could print anything I wanted onto one piece of apparel, what would it be? This question allows you to peer deep into your own soul. I took that opportunity. I peeked. Staring back at me, I saw a seven year old version of myself. The question of what to print, I realized, was better suited to seven year old me. His answer would probably be much cooler. And it was.

He wanted a collage of all his favorite shit. He wanted me to dress up as nostalgia.

I soon recognized the parallels between this task and the plot of the Tom Hanks film Big. Ideas began to form. I would use Photoshop to make a kickass collage, featuring all of my favorite stuff from when I was seven. I would print it on the back of bright white button-up shirt. I would construct a white bow tie out of paper. Together, they would represent the amazing white tuxedo Josh Baskin wore to the MacMillan Toy Company annual party. I found some laser tag equipment at the local Goodwill, perfect to represent the gear Josh wears when running around FAO Schwartz (just before impressing his boss with some slick Chopsticks on the giant floor piano). I also picked up some sweatpants and tennis shoes to represent the early scene in which he first discovers that he is ‘big’.  More importantly, my seven year old self would have refused to wear any pants but sweatpants. Some sweet blue-blocker sunglasses, straight out of the 80s, topped it all off.

At this point I realized no one was going to understand my costume. But I was already too deep. The only solution was to make them understand it. So, yeah, I created a paint-by-numbers layout (pictured below) that labeled each element of my collage. I also typed up a multi-paragraph explanation of the costume. I printed out a bunch of copies, fully prepared to distribute them to fellow party-goers. Just before handing out the first flyer, I realized how incredibly lame this had become. Alas, I was committed. I did it anyway.

How did my costume turn out? It looked incredible. It was beautiful. And also everyone hated it. Basically ruined Halloween for a few people, I think. But I still have the shirt and it is still awesome. Here were the results:
